Agartala will become a hub of scholarly dialogue on law, governance, and economics as National Law University, Tripura (NLUT) is set to organise a two-day National Conference on 'Kautilya’s Arthashastra: Ancient Wisdom and Contemporary Legal Thought' on 20–21 March 2026. The conference will be held at the NLUT campus in Agartala in hybrid mode, allowing participation both offline and online.

The national-level academic event is being organised by the Kautilya Centre for Law and Economics (KCLE) and the Centre for Study and Research in Vedic Jurisprudence (CSRVJ) of NLUT, in collaboration with the Tripura Law and Training Institute. The conference aims to revisit and reinterpret the timeless principles of Kautilya’s Arthashastra in the context of modern legal systems, governance structures, public administration, and economic regulation.

According to the organisers, the Arthashastra is not merely an ancient political treatise but a comprehensive framework encompassing statecraft, justice delivery, economic management, diplomacy, and ethical governance. The conference seeks to examine how these classical ideas can inform and enrich contemporary legal thought, policymaking, and institutional governance in India and beyond.

Scholars, jurists, legal practitioners, economists, researchers, academicians, and students from across the country are expected to participate in the conference. The deliberations will focus on the relevance of ancient Indian jurisprudence in addressing present-day legal and economic challenges, especially at a time when India is increasingly engaging with indigenous knowledge systems in law and governance.

NLUT, established under the Tripura Act No. 3 of 2022, is the 25th National Law University in India. Located in the smart and green capital city of Agartala, the university offers integrated BA LLB (Hons), LLM, and PhD programmes. The university has been steadily positioning itself as a centre of excellence for legal education and research in the North Eastern region.

The Kautilya Centre for Law and Economics focuses on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of law and economics, while the Centre for Study and Research in Vedic Jurisprudence is dedicated to exploring and reviving ancient Indian legal traditions and their contemporary relevance. Through this national conference, NLUT aims to contribute meaningfully to the evolving discourse on decolonising legal education and strengthening India’s intellectual heritage.

Interested participants and institutions can find further details on the university’s official website or contact the organisers through the official NLUT communication channels.
