The Government of India has launched the ‘Rah-Veer’ scheme to encourage, recognise and honour individuals who ensure that road accident victims are taken to hospitals within the critical “Golden Hour”—the first one hour after an accident that is vital for saving lives.
Under this newly introduced initiative, eight individuals from North Tripura district were honoured on December 22, 2025, at the Tripura Secretariat for their exemplary courage and humanitarian service in saving lives of road accident victims. Among them was DSP Babulal Debnath, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Dharmanagar, along with Titu Dutta, Uttam Pal, Shyamal Das, Santosh Das, Biswajit Choudhury, Jayanta Sinha and Mingchung Nonga. Each of the eight ‘Rah-Veers’ was awarded a certificate of honour and a cheque of Rs. 25,000.
In a moment of pride for Tripura, DSP Babulal Debnath has now secured second position among the top five Rah-Veers of the country in the ‘Rah-Veer Honour Memorial 2026’.
The prestigious national recognition was conferred on January 23, 2026, during ‘The Grand Telethon of Road Safety Campaign 2026’, held at Prime Focus Studio, Film City, Mumbai. DSP Debnath received the honour from Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, marking a proud moment for Tripura at the national level.
Following this achievement, DSP Babulal Debnath was felicitated today at the Tripura Secretariat in recognition of his exceptional contribution to road safety and humanitarian service.
The national honour is rooted in a courageous and deeply humane act performed by DSP Debnath on July 1, 2025. While returning to Agartala after dropping his daughter at Agartala Airport, he noticed an elderly woman lying critically injured and bleeding on the road at Durjoynagar under NCC Police Station area. The incident was a brutal hit-and-run accident, with no one around to help the victim.
Without hesitation, DSP Debnath stopped his vehicle and, with the help of a local resident, rushed the injured woman to the Trauma Centre of GBP Hospital, Agartala. Due to timely medical intervention, her life was successfully saved—an act that perfectly embodied the spirit of the ‘Rah-Veer’ initiative.
Speaking on the occasion, Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said that saving the lives of accident victims is not only a humanitarian responsibility but also a noble duty that reflects the true value of human life. He expressed hope that DSP Babulal Debnath’s exemplary courage, compassion and sense of duty would inspire people across all sections of society to come forward and help accident victims without fear or hesitation.
The ‘Rah-Veer’ scheme stands as a powerful reminder that timely action, empathy and courage can turn ordinary citizens into life-saving heroes—and DSP Babulal Debnath’s story is now an inspiration for the entire nation.
