After years of anticipation,'POROBASHI', a Bengali–Kokborok bilingual feature film, is finally ready for its theatrical release. Produced by Anil Debnath under the banner of Purba Diganta Film Production, with Sujata Debnath as co-producer, and directed by Monet Roy Saha, the film is a collective artistic effort of eminent artistes from West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura.
The film will have its grand release in Kolkata on 20 February, followed by its Tripura release on 27 February.
Producer Anil Debnath, while sharing the news, has earnestly appealed to all well-wishers and social media friends to watch the film and encourage others to experience this hard-earned cinematic creation, born out of immense dedication and struggle.
Against the Turbulent 1960s Set against the politically and socially volatile backdrop of 1960, Porobashi narrates a deeply moving human tale of migration, loss, identity, and survival. The film reflects a crucial chapter of history when religious persecution in then East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh) forced countless families to abandon their homes in search of safety.
The story follows Nimai, a former freedom fighter, who migrates to India with his family to escape persecution. During this perilous journey, his daughter Asima goes missing, an incident that permanently alters the family’s fate.
The family eventually takes shelter in an indigenous village in Tripura, led by Puniram. As life slowly regains rhythm, Nimai begins teaching local children, while his family attempts to adapt to their new surroundings. His son Atul marries Puniram’s daughter, Phulmati, a union that symbolically bridges two communities but also intensifies underlying social tensions.
As waves of refugees continue to arrive, fear of demographic change grips the indigenous population. Misinformation, manipulation, and violence by misguided youths gradually deepen the divide between migrants and indigenous people, pushing the region toward conflict.
In a dramatic twist of fate, the family reunites with Asima, now living in Bangladesh as 'Asima Begum'. However, this reunion does not bring relief. Instead, it unfolds into a profound psychological and emotional tragedy rooted in fractured identity and belonging.
The escalating conflict between migrants and indigenous communities leads to bloodshed and irreversible loss. Nimai’s family shatters, and once again, he is forced onto an uncertain path, searching for a new refuge, a new beginning.
The film stars Loknath Dey, Kinjal Nanda, Devapratim Dasgupta, Swati Mukherjee, and Sabuj Bardhan in pivotal roles, along with several other noted actors. Cinematography is handled by Jayesh Nair, while music direction is by Amit Chatterjee. The soundtrack features voices of renowned singers including Shaan, Iman Chakraborty, Mekhla Dasgupta, and Ikshita.
Notably, Porobashi was selected in the competition section of the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival, where it received strong appreciation from audiences for its storytelling, performances, and historical sensitivity.
Porobashi is not just a film, it is a poignant reflection on history, humanity, and the enduring pain of displacement. Blending emotion, realism, and historical truth, the film promises to leave a lasting impact on audiences across generations as it arrives on the big screen this February.
