A wave of tension and grief has swept through Padmadepa area under Melaghar police station following the tragic death of a 13-year-old boy, allegedly after being assaulted by a local political leader. Today morning, left-student and youth organisations staged a deputation at Melaghar Police Station, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and a fair, impartial investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Nayan Saha (13), a resident of Ward No. 5 of the Padmadepa area. According to family members, the minor was summoned and allegedly reprimanded and physically assaulted following a complaint raised by a local individual. The family claims that the assault was carried out by Dulal Sutradhar, a person holding multiple influential positions in the locality.
As per the allegations, Dulal Sutradhar is the Chairman of the Melaghar Wood Industry Cooperative Society, Secretary of Melaghar Vivekananda Club, and a mandal-level leader of a political party. Family members stated that after the incident, Nayan returned home in a visibly unwell condition. As his health deteriorated, locals rushed him to Melaghar Hospital, from where he was referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala.
Despite medical treatment, the minor succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at GB Hospital. After completing all hospital formalities, the grieving family brought the body to Melaghar police station on Friday afternoon and formally lodged a complaint against Dulal Sutradhar, accusing him of being responsible for the boy’s death.
Melaghar police have confirmed that an investigation has been initiated. Officials stated that all aspects of the complaint are being examined carefully and that no conclusion can be drawn until the probe is completed.
The incident has cast a pall of sorrow over the area and has sparked intense public debate. Many residents and social observers have raised serious concerns about the conduct of influential and responsible individuals in society, particularly stressing the need for sensitivity, restraint, and lawful behaviour when dealing with minors.
