Police in Tripura’s West district have arrested a man claiming to be a Bangladeshi national after detaining him during routine mobile patrol duty in the Hapania area, officials said on Thursday.
The arrest was made by personnel of Amtali police station after Sub-Inspector Sachin Debbarma noticed the man moving suspiciously in front of Nirmala Hotel, Officer-in-Charge Paritosh Das said.
During preliminary questioning, the man disclosed that he hailed from Chittagong in Bangladesh, Das said. A subsequent search led to the seizure of Bangladeshi and Indian currencies from his possession, he added, noting that the exact amounts were under verification.
Police also recovered a Bangladeshi driving licence and a Bangladeshi voter identity card allegedly found on him, the officer said.
The accused has been identified as Abdur Rahman, Das added.
Following the seizure, police registered a specific case against the accused under relevant provisions of law. He was produced before a local court, where police sought his remand for further interrogation, the officer said.
According to police, the arrest was made on Wednesday while the accused was moving around the area without providing any satisfactory explanation for his presence. He was taken into custody for questioning after raising suspicion during routine checks, officials said.
Police said an investigation was underway to verify the authenticity of the seized documents and to ascertain the circumstances under which the accused entered and stayed in the area.
Officials said they were also examining whether the accused had any local contacts and if he was involved in any other activities. Necessary legal procedures were being followed, they added.
Further developments are expected as the investigation progresses, police said.
