A major political and administrative stir was witnessed in Chhamanu under Dhalai District on Tuesday after police recovered a huge quantity of illegally stocked organic fertiliser from the residence of a TIPRA Motha leader. The accused has been identified as Mohanlal Chakma, a former BJP Mandal President who recently joined TIPRA Motha after levelling allegations of corruption against leaders of his former party.
According to police sources, acting on a specific tip-off, a police team reached Chakma’s residence early Tuesday morning and conducted a thorough search operation. During the raid, police recovered as many as 54 bags of organic fertiliser hidden in different parts of a room owned by Chakma. The fertiliser was allegedly stocked without any valid documents or authorization, making it illegal under existing regulations.
What has further intensified the controversy is the fact that no clear explanation has emerged regarding how such a large quantity of fertiliser of government supply reached his premises. Local sources claim that neither Chakma nor his associates could satisfactorily explain the source, purpose, or intended distribution of the seized fertiliser.
Mohanlal Chakma, who is known in the area as a bold and influential leader, had recently made headlines after quitting the BJP and joining TIPRA Motha, accusing BJP leaders of corruption. The recovery of illegal fertiliser from his house has now triggered sharp reactions and speculation in local political circles, with leaders and residents questioning the credibility and conduct of public representatives.
Police officials stated that preliminary investigation confirms the fertiliser was stored illegally and further inquiry underway to determine whether it was meant for black marketing or misuse under government subsidy schemes. Legal action is expected to follow based on the outcome of the investigation.
The incident has created widespread sensation in Chhamanu, with the matter likely to have political repercussions in the coming days as opposition parties and local leaders demand a transparent and impartial probe.
