Serious concern has been raised by residents of Hakim Para, Ashram Sadar Para and Duski Bazar areas under Teliamura subdivision in Khowai district over the alleged operation of illegal home-brewed liquor dens. Locals allege that several residential houses in these areas have been turned into virtual bars, posing a grave threat to public health, law and order, and social harmony.

According to reliable local sources, a few families are allegedly engaged in preparing Bangla mal (locally brewed liquor) inside their homes and selling it regularly to customers not only from Teliamura town but also from surrounding areas such as Moharchra and Kalyanpur. It is alleged that every evening between 6 pm and 9 pm, groups of young men discreetly visit these houses, consume liquor along with meat, and later roam the neighbourhood in an intoxicated state.

Residents claim that such gatherings often result in loud arguments, unruly behaviour and occasional brawls among intoxicated individuals, sometimes involving other residents and creating fear among women, children and elderly people in the locality.

Sources further allege that these illegal activities are not confined to evening hours alone. On several occasions, liquor consumption is reportedly carried out during noon hours as well, particularly between 12.30 pm and 1.30 pm, which has further alarmed families living nearby.

What has deeply disturbed the local community is the alleged complete disregard by consumers regarding the quality and safety of the liquor being consumed. Locals claim that most of the customers are young and middle-aged men, largely from the Bengali community, many of whom are reportedly becoming habitual drinkers.

Even more alarming are allegations that the locally brewed liquor is often adulterated with addictive and potentially toxic substances, some of which are reportedly procured from pharmacies to enhance the potency of the alcohol. Community members fear that continued consumption of such adulterated liquor could lead to serious health complications, accidents or even fatalities if the situation remains unchecked.

Residents have named several individuals, including Smt. Hira Rani Debbarma of Duski Bazar, Lilu Debbarma, Ranjit Debbarma, Benu Debbarma and Rajani Debbarma of Ashram Sadar Para, and Odom Debbarma of Hakim Para, as persons allegedly involved in brewing and selling illicit liquor. Locals further allege that one of the accused, Ranjit Debbarma, is a retired government employee and that his residence allegedly operates as an illegal bar during night hours.

It is also alleged that detailed information regarding the illegal liquor manufacturing and distribution network had earlier been submitted to the office of the SDPO concerned. However, residents claim that no visible action has been taken so far, despite repeated alerts by vigilant citizens. Locals allege that both the police administration and elected representatives are well aware of these activities but have remained inactive.

Community members have expressed growing apprehension that public anger is steadily rising and warned that continued inaction by authorities could provoke unrest. They have urged the administration to carry out sustained raids during peak hours, especially on weekends over the next two months, followed by regular monthly monitoring for at least six months to curb the menace effectively.

Residents have also voiced concern over the changing social fabric of the area, claiming that alcohol abuse is reportedly increasing among local Bengali youths, while it is decreasing among the Tiprasa community. They stressed that political leaders, social organisations and elected representatives must take a proactive stand against such destructive practices instead of ignoring or trivialising the issue.

Locals have made a strong appeal to the district administration, police authorities and public representatives to intervene immediately to prevent further deterioration of law and order, safeguard public health and restore peace and normalcy in the affected localities.
