The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Tripura State Committee, has strongly condemned the alleged attack on noted painter and artist Satyajit Das, describing the incident as a grave assault on culture, creativity, and democratic values in the state.

In a press statement issued on Friday, DYFI stated that the incident occurred on January 23, when Satyajit Das, regarded as one of Tripura’s promising artistic talents, was allegedly attacked by BJP supporters at Kalyanpur under Teliamura subdivision. According to the statement, Das was returning home through Kalyanpur market in broad daylight after attending a Saraswati Puja programme, when he was reportedly assaulted by a group led by a BJP leader Jayanta Bhattacharjee. The attack left the artist seriously injured.

The youth organisation alleged that such incidents reflect a disturbing pattern of intolerance and violence, claiming that similar acts of intimidation had earlier forced the then Left Front government to take steps to curb such behaviour. DYFI warned that attacks on artists and intellectuals pose a serious threat to society and amount to an attempt to murder creativity and free expression.

Calling for an immediate end to what it termed a culture of violence, DYFI demanded that the state government take prompt action by arresting those responsible and ensuring exemplary punishment. The organisation stressed that only strict and impartial action could restore public confidence and protect artists and cultural workers from targeted attacks.

The statement was issued by DYFI Tripura State Committee Secretary Nabarun Deb, who reiterated that the organisation would continue to stand against violence and in defence of democratic and cultural values in Tripura.
