A government residential quarter under the Health Department, allegedly occupied illegally by the Unakoti District Yuva Morcha president Arup Dhar, was sealed today afternoon following strong protests from local residents, Hindu organisations and the BJP mandal committee.
Acting on the instructions of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, the quarter was sealed in the presence of DCM Himanta Dhar with assistance from the police administration. During the operation, the police recovered a large quantity of sharp weapons, iron rods, empty foreign liquor bottles and several empty packets of condoms from inside the premises.
Local residents alleged that the government quarter had, for a long time, been used as a hub of antisocial activities and unlawful gatherings, causing serious concern among people living in the surrounding areas, including residents of the Harijan Colony. They claimed that repeated complaints were ignored until tensions escalated recently.
The administrative action followed a series of violent incidents, including an alleged attack on a BJP mandal president and a subsequent retaliatory attack on the residence of the Yuva Morcha leader. In the wake of these incidents, the district administration intervened, leading to the sealing of the illegally occupied government property today afternoon.
Police officials confirmed that the recovered items have been seized as part of the investigation, and further inquiry is underway to determine how the government quarter was being used and under what circumstances it came to be occupied.
The incident has triggered sharp political reactions in the area, with local organisations demanding strict action against those involved and calling for transparent use of government properties strictly for official purposes.
