Tripura Police have taken suo motu cognisance of the violent clash that erupted between two groups linked to the BJP during Saraswati Puja celebrations in Kailashahar on yesterday afternoon. Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar on Thursday said that all those identified as being involved in the incident will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.

Speaking to the media in the state capital, the DGP said the clash took place between two rival groups and that police are investigating the exact reasons behind the violence. He asserted that such acts of indiscipline and lawlessness will not be tolerated. “Those responsible will have to face punishment,” he said.

According to reports, the violence broke out in the busy Katal Dighirpar area of Kailashahar when a sudden confrontation between two contractor groups turned the locality into a virtual battlefield. Kailashahar Mandal President Pritam Ghosh was injured in the clash, while the residence of BJP Yuva Morcha district president Arup Dhar was vandalised. Two to three persons from the other group also sustained injuries.

Miscreants allegedly set fire to an unofficial office of the ruling party at Katal Dighirpar. To bring the situation under control, police resorted to a lathi charge and fired four rounds in the air.

Senior officials, including District Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rahul A, Kailashahar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tapas Malakar, along with a large contingent of TSR and central forces, rushed to the spot. The situation was brought under control later in the evening.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha made it clear that no one involved in such violence would be spared. He said that in Kailashahar or in any similar incident elsewhere in the state, the accused would be punished strictly as per law.

The Chief Minister also appealed to all concerned not to indulge in politics over the Kailashahar incident. He stressed that there should be no political colouring of such incidents and reiterated that maintaining law and order is the priority of the government. “There will be no politics in such cases. Whoever is guilty will be punished,” Dr Saha said.

Reiterating the police stand, DGP Anurag Dhankar said that the force is keeping a close watch on the situation and assured that arrests would be made soon. He reaffirmed that police action would be impartial and that all culprits involved in creating the disturbance would face legal consequences.
