A large consignment of illegal cough syrup seized earlier by the police was destroyed on court orders at Bodhjungnagar area of Tripura on Tuesday, officials said.
The destruction was carried out by the High Level Drug Destroy Committee in the presence of its chairman, Abala Ramesh Reddy. Two members of the committee, including Anirban Das, and the Superintendent of Police (Traffic) were also present during the process.
According to officials, the seized contraband comprised around 1,07,800 bottles of Eskaf cough syrup, with an estimated market value of Rs 2.12 crore. The consignment had been seized by the police on October 17 last year from Jirania railway station during a special operation against drug trafficking.
Officials said the destruction was conducted strictly in accordance with legal procedures and environmental safety norms after receiving clearance from the court. The exercise was aimed at preventing any possibility of the seized narcotics re-entering the illegal market.
Police officials stated that the seizure was part of the state’s ongoing drive against the trafficking of codeine-based cough syrups, which are often misused as narcotic substances. Tripura has emerged as a transit route for drug smuggling due to its geographical location, prompting intensified enforcement measures by law enforcement agencies.
The High Level Drug Destroy Committee regularly undertakes destruction of seized narcotic substances following judicial approval, officials said, adding that coordinated efforts between the police, administration and other agencies were being strengthened to curb drug-related crimes in the state.
