Serious allegations of irregularities and corruption have surfaced over the distribution of food packets to school students during the 48th Tripura Kokborok Day celebrations. It has been alleged that children were cheated in the name of food distribution, raising questions about the conduct of the organisers and the private agency entrusted with the responsibility.
According to the allegations, each food packet was supposed to contain a cake worth Rs. 27, one bangui (traditional snack), one orange, and a bottle of drinking water. However, most of the students reportedly did not receive the cake, orange, or water bottle. The packets distributed to many children contained only a single bangui, despite being packed in large food boxes.
Sources said the incident occurred during the official programme marking the 48th Kokborok Day, where school children were invited to attend from as early as 7 am. Despite waiting for several hours, food was not distributed until around noon. Due to the long delay, many small children reportedly left the venue hungry, without receiving any food at all.
Even those who eventually received food packets expressed disappointment, stating that the quantity was grossly inadequate and did not match what was officially promised. The disparity between the size of the food box and the actual contents has further fuelled suspicion.
It has also been alleged that an amount of Rs. 200 was sanctioned for each food packet. This has led to serious questions being raised about where the remaining money went, as the food provided was nowhere near the value of the allocated amount. Allegations are now being made that the private agency awarded the tender may have been involved in misappropriation of funds.
The incident has sparked outrage among parents, guardians, and members of the public, who have termed the act inhuman and a betrayal of trust, especially when it involved young school children during a cultural celebration of great significance. Demands are growing for a high-level inquiry to identify those responsible and to ensure strict action against anyone found guilty of corruption.
