The Tripura Bar Association has taken a firm stand demanding the immediate removal of Gautam Sarkar, President of the West District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. The association has given the state government a three-day ultimatum to dismiss him from the post, failing which it has warned of launching a larger statewide movement.Senior advocate Pijus Kanti Biswas of the Tripura Bar Association along with Kaushik Indu and Arindam Bhattacharjee conveyed this decision to the media on Tuesday following an emergency meeting held in Agartala. The lawyers announced that they would continue to boycott Gautam Sarkar’s court as a mark of protest and would not resume proceedings under his bench.According to the Bar Association, Gautam Sarkar has previously displayed similar unbecoming and indecent behaviour while presiding over court proceedings in Sonamura and Ambassa, allegedly while being in an inebriated condition. The association alleged that such conduct has repeatedly tarnished the dignity of the judiciary and severely affected the court environment. The Bar Association has also decided to formally place its demand before the state’s Food Minister Sushanta Chowdhury today, seeking government intervention and immediate action. The lawyers made it clear that allowing a judicial officer to function in an allegedly intoxicated state on a regular basis is completely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.Warning the state government of serious consequences if no action is taken, the agitating lawyers said that the legal fraternity would intensify the movement in the coming days. The Tripura Bar Association unanimously resolved that protecting the sanctity, discipline, and credibility of the judicial system is non-negotiable and any compromise on this issue would be strongly resisted.
