Tripura Police and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel seized unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 9.83 lakh during a joint operation in a border village under Sonamura police station in Sepahijala district, officials said on Friday.

The seizure was made from the residence of one Mofiz Miah at Anandnagar village, a border-adjacent area that law enforcement agencies have identified as sensitive due to its proximity to the international border.

Officials said the operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs. A joint team comprising personnel from Sonamura police station and the 81st Battalion of the BSF conducted a search at the house, during which the cash was recovered.

Police said neither Miah nor his family members could provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of the money or the reason for keeping such a large sum of cash at home. In the absence of any valid documentation or justification, the money was seized in accordance with legal procedures and brought to the police station.

Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura police station Tapas Das said further action would be taken in line with government norms. He said a special investigation team had been constituted to probe the matter.

“The investigation team will verify the source of the seized cash and submit its findings, based on which appropriate legal action will be initiated,” Das said.

Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the seizure is linked to any organised illegal activity.
