It was a painful and pathetic sight-a married woman seated in ‘Dharna’ in front of the Boxanagar police station-demanding the unconditional release of her husband from police custody. Police sources said that Sohag Mia (35) , known to be a lineman (signaller) for cattle smuggling across the border from this side, had been arrested by a team of police from the Boxanagar station on last Monday on the basis of a complaint from the BSF and other local people. Sohag , a resident of Ashabari, had been involved in smuggling activities like many others in the area, as a signaller for helping the bigger sharks. He had been sent to jail custody for a week by the court where he had been produced by police.

However, the arrest and jail custody of Sohag Mia left his wife Ayesha Bibi and two children in a helpless condition . Protesting the continued detention of her husband Ayesha Bibi yesterday appeared before the police station and launched a sit-in strike while shedding tears demanding release of her husband. Many people gathered in the area and while speaking to them Ayesha Bibi said that her husband was not involved in smuggling activities and he had been framed by other persons guilty of the crime. She added that she was in a helpless condition with her two children in the absence of her husband from home.

Finally the officer in charge of Boxanagar police station Arup Debbarma came out and told Ayesha that her husband had been arrested on the basis of specific charge and that he had nothing to do with the matter. He also asked Ayesha Bibi to take help from a lawyer to have her husband bailed out from court. After her sit-in for several hours Ayesha Bibi returned home, crestfallen.
