Senior leader and MLA of ‘Tipra Motha’ Ranjit Debbarma has taken strong exception to the changed schedule of ‘Kokborok’ language day observance at the college level by the education department of the state. He has registered his objection to the changed schedule in letters addressed to the director of school education N.C.Sharma and minister for higher education Kishore Barman.

What has caused Ranjit’s ire is that the ‘Kokborok’ day is generally observed on January 19 as it was on this date that the then left front government had extended official recognition to the state’s tribal language in the year 1979 as an official language by a gazette notification . Since then the day has been officially observed as the ‘Kokborok’ language day . But on the eve of that day this year the director of school education has issued an order directing colleges across the state to observe the day from January 9 to 17th.

Reacting to this MLA Ranjit Debbama has protested the changed schedule of observance, saying a historic day can not be changed at will . “The matter involves the emotion and sentiment of state’s indigenous people because their mother tongue to them , as to others , is a very important occasion; this kind of tinkering with historical dates will cause grave resentment among the people, hurting their sentiments” said Ranjit in his letter. He has urged the director of school education as well as the minister for higher education to rethink the issue and stick to the original date of ‘Kokborok’ language day.
