Poet Asim Datta Roy no more, breathes his last in Calcutta home, mourning among friends and well wishers

In a big jolt to Tripura’s cultural world, leading poet Asim Datta Roy (75), once an officer in the ICA department , breathed his last in his home at Calcutta’s Tollyganj area yesterday in the morning. He had been suffering from heart ailments and lung disorder for some time and was almost out of touch with the outside world as his doctors had directed him to keep away from any contact with mobile phone. He is survived by his wife and two children settled in Calcutta.

Born at Agartala in the year 1949 Asim Datta Roy had his education in Umakanta Academy and Karimganj college in the then undivided Cachar district and joined cultural movement after coming back home. He was closely associated with the leftist cultural movement in Tripura and was a member of the once-famous drama group ‘Rupam’ that had created a sensation in the state with its performances. He had also started making his mark as a young poet along with his close friends and fellow-poets Ratul Debbarma, Nilip Podder, Partha Ganguly and Swapan Sengupta et al. In the late sixties Asim Datta Roy had joined the department of ICA and gradually rose up in ranks before becoming an officer before retirement. He had functioned as press secretary to then chief minister Manik Sarkar for several years till his retirement and then settled in Calcutta but he kept in touch with Agartala and used to visit his native city several times a year till he fell seriously ill. Many intellectuals, poets and literary personalities expressed their grief over the passing away of Asim Datta Roy and said that he will be remembered for his contribution to the state and its cultural arena.
