Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Asish Kumar Saha on Tuesday alleged that those responsible for orchestrating the recent communal violence in Shimultala under Fatikroy police station were still at large, while innocent persons had been arrested to create an impression of police action.
Addressing mediapersons at Fatikroy, Saha claimed there was a deliberate attempt to shield the real miscreants. He said such incidents were not new in the state and cited earlier episodes of violence in Kadamtala-Kurti, Kaiturabari and Panisagar, alleging a recurring pattern since the BJP came to power. He also alleged that the police denied permission to a Congress delegation to visit the affected area, raising further questions over transparency.
The PCC chief said the prevailing situation had left peace-loving citizens fearful, asserting that the law and order condition in the state had deteriorated to an alarming extent. According to him, people no longer felt safe or secure due to repeated incidents of communal tension.
Referring to the timing of the incident, Saha said the violence broke out when the Chief Minister was on an official visit to a neighbouring district and claimed that the measures taken to control the situation were inadequate despite the proximity.
Taking an indirect swipe at the local MLA and minister, Saha alleged that provocative statements by elected representatives targeting a particular community sent the wrong signal at the grassroots level, further aggravating tensions in the state.
