7th Alumni Meet of Economics Department Held at Tripura University

The Department of Economics Alumni Association (DEAA), Tripura University, organised its 7th Alumni Meet on 11th January, 2026, Sunday at the Department of Economics, Tripura University, Suryamaninagar, with active participation of over 90 alumni along with the faculty members, students, and invited guests. The programme commenced with the ceremonial watering of a sapling, symbolising growth and continuity, followed by an inaugural cultural presentation. Prof. Jahar Debbarma, President of DEAA, welcomed the gathering and underlined the association’s sustained engagement in academic and student-oriented initiatives.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University and Padma Shri Awardee 2025, Arunoday Saha, attended the programme as the Chief Guest and was felicitated by the association. In his address, Prof. Saha fondly recalled his long association with the Department of Economics and emphasised the responsibilities of students as future citizens of India, the opportunities before them, and the importance of preparing for emerging socio-economic challenges.

During the session, three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between DEAA and distinguished alumni and patrons to institutionalise memorial awards. MoUs were signed with Sri Tapesh Ranjan Chakraborty for instituting the Nihar Ranjan Chakraborty Memorial Award for the topper in the Master’s Degree Programme in Economics and the Rekha Chakraborty Memorial Award for the topper in the IMD Programme in Economics at Tripura University; with Sri Sanjoy Bhattacharjee for the Malati Prabha Memorial Award for toppers in the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Economics from Tripura University and Maharaja Bir Bikram University; and with Sri Utpal Nath for the Hemaprava Nath Memorial Award for first-rank holders in Economics at the Higher Secondary level examinations conducted by Tripura Board of Secondary Education, Central Board of Secondary Education, and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations. The distribution of these awards for the academic year 2025 was the major highlight of the Alumni Meet, reflecting DEAA’s commitment to promoting academic excellence and inclusivity.

On the occasion, a book on Tribal Livelihoods, authored by Dr. Nanigopal Debnath, senior alumnus and faculty member of CSSEIP, Tripura University, was formally inaugurated by the Chief Guest. Prof. Salim Shah, senior faculty member and representative of the Department of Economics, addressed the gathering and highlighted the academic journey of the department, emphasising the crucial role of alumni in strengthening teaching, research and institutional development.

The formal session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Manidip Roy, General Secretary, DEAA. The post-lunch programme included felicitation of the Silver Jubilee Batch and senior alumni, followed by experience sharing and a cultural extravaganza involving alumni and invited artists, making the meet a vibrant blend of academic reflection, recognition, and celebration.
