A 27-year-old Bangladeshi woman, who allegedly faced prolonged physical and mental torture at the hands of her Indian in-laws, was rescued in Sonamura on Sunday with the help of a local journalist and later handed over to the police.
The woman, identified as Sweety Akter, reportedly escaped from her in-laws’ house at Melaghar and reached the Sonamura court complex seeking help from the authorities. In her search for assistance, she came in contact with local journalist Md Mamun Miah, who, after hearing her ordeal, informed the police and facilitated her handover to Sonamura police station.
Police sources said she was produced before a court and, following legal procedures, was remanded to judicial custody under relevant sections of the Passport Act. Officials added that steps would be taken for her deportation to Bangladesh as per the law. Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura police station Tapas Das confirmed the arrest and court remand.
Speaking to reporters, Sweety alleged that she had fallen in love with Sagar, a resident of Mohanbhog block in Melaghar, five years ago after meeting him in Bangladesh. She later crossed the border illegally to marry him following religious customs. She claimed that after her husband left the country for work, she and her infant daughter were subjected to repeated abuse by her in-laws.
She further alleged that despite assurances given earlier, the torture intensified and she was separated from her child. The incident has drawn attention to her plight as she awaits legal deportation to her homeland.
