More than 15 picnic-goers were injured in a head-on collision between two vehicles in Tripura’s Charilam area on Saturday while they were returning home after attending a picnic, police said.

The accident took place at the Chhechurimai area under Charilam when a Max vehicle and a Swift car collided head-on. The injured passengers were reportedly returning to Sonamura after participating in a picnic at Khumlwung. The impact of the collision was severe, leaving several occupants of both vehicles injured.

Eyewitnesses immediately alerted the fire service stations at Bishramganj and Bishalgarh. Fire service personnel rushed to the spot, carried out rescue operations and shifted the injured to Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital for initial treatment.

Hospital sources said that due to the seriousness of injuries sustained by several victims, they were later referred to the Trauma Centre of Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital for advanced medical care. The condition of some of the injured was stated to be critical.

The driver of the Max vehicle allegedly fled the scene soon after the accident, triggering anger among the families of the injured. Relatives alleged that the collision was caused deliberately by the driver.

Police from Bishramganj police station reached the spot, brought the situation under control and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and trace the absconding driver.
