Panic prevailed at the Dasarath Deb Memorial Residential Higher Secondary School campus at Kalachhara under Sabroom subdivision on Sunday after a fire broke out in a room of the girls’ hostel, officials said.

The incident occurred at around 9.30 am when a sudden blaze erupted in one of the hostel rooms, causing extensive damage to the belongings of students residing there. Preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit.

As it was a Sunday, the hostel premises were relatively calm at the time of the incident. However, the sudden outbreak of fire created panic among the students. The flames spread rapidly, leaving the inmates of the affected room with little time to rescue their personal items. Books, notebooks, clothes and other essential belongings were gutted in the fire, resulting in significant losses.

Several important educational materials were reduced to ashes, adding to the distress of the students. With the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations drawing near, the incident has caused anxiety among students as well as their parents.

On receiving information, personnel from the fire brigade and local police rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control before it could spread to other parts of the hostel. Officials confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

Authorities said further assessment of the damage is being carried out and necessary steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in future.
