Tension prevailed in South Chandrapur village under the Udaipur subdivision on Sunday following allegations of cow slaughter in a Hindu-majority area, prompting the administration to tighten security to prevent any breach of peace.

According to sources, two cattle were allegedly slaughtered in a Hindu-dominated locality during preparations for a religious congregation of the Muslim community. The incident reportedly triggered strong resentment among local residents, leading to a tense situation in the village.

Police sources said prior permission had been obtained from the administration to organise the religious congregation near a mosque in South Chandrapur. The event has been held regularly for nearly three decades and usually attracts around 1,000 to 1,500 participants from various parts of the state.

Local residents claimed that the cattle were slaughtered as part of preparations for the feast associated with the religious programme. As news of the incident spread, a group of youths rushed to the spot and raised objections, following which people from both communities began to assemble, escalating tensions.

The congregation is reportedly being organised under the aegis of Abdul Malek, a resident of the village. On receiving information, police from Radhakishorepur police station rushed to the area and managed to bring the situation under control.

Senior police officials, including the Superintendent of Police and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, visited the village to assess the ground situation. Additional police personnel and Tripura State Rifles have been deployed, and strict vigil is being maintained to ensure peace during the programme.
