Chief Minister Professor (Dr) Manik Saha on Friday said the Swadeshi Mela is not merely a commercial or cultural event but a strong reflection of the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat, aimed at promoting indigenous products, preserving cultural heritage and achieving economic self-sufficiency.

Inaugurating Swadeshi Mela 2026 at Swami Vivekananda Maidan here, organised by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), the Chief Minister said the state government has been working relentlessly to translate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Vocal for Local’ into reality.

“Atmanirbhar Bharat is not just a slogan but a people’s movement, where every citizen can contribute to nation-building by using locally made products,” Saha said. He noted that India has attained self-reliance in several sectors and stressed that it is the moral responsibility of citizens to use goods produced within the country to help achieve the goal of a developed India by 2047.

The Chief Minister emphasised the need to encourage local production and consumption, stating that ‘Vocal for Local’ seeks to reduce dependency while strengthening the domestic economy. He said the state government is giving priority to locally produced goods and focusing on quality enhancement, innovation, technology-driven manufacturing and market expansion so that Tripura’s products gain wider recognition.

Saha said Tripura has witnessed significant progress in sectors such as law and order, education and communication, and is increasingly attracting interest from outside investors.

Agartala Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder said the fair, which will continue till January 11, 2026, aims to create awareness about indigenous products and provide a major platform for local producers and artisans.

MP Rajib Bhattacharjee called upon people to actively support the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative to strengthen self-reliance and economic growth.

Several MLAs, senior officials and civic representatives were present at the event. The Chief Minister and other dignitaries later visited various stalls at the fair.
