A serious controversy has triggered sharp tension within judicial circles in Sabroom, South Tripura, following allegations of misconduct and threats by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) against a practicing lawyer. In protest, the Sabroom Bar Association has announced a complete boycott of all case hearings and documentation-related work at the SDM court from Monday, January 12, demanding strict legal action against the accused IAS officer.

The allegations are against Sabroom SDM Abhijit Singh Yadav (IAS). However, the SDM has categorically denied the charges, claiming instead that the concerned advocate behaved improperly with him. According to the SDM’s version, during court proceedings he merely requested the advocate not to crowd the temporary courtroom and to take a seat in front of the dais when his case was called for hearing. The SDM alleged that the advocate became aggressive over this request and later misrepresented the incident, misleading other lawyers and spreading misinformation to tarnish his image. This clarification has reportedly been issued from the SDM office.

According to available information, the incident took place on January 7. The complainant, advocate Ratan Nath, who is also the Vice-President of the Sabroom Bar Association, told local media that while a case under Section 126 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was being heard, the magistrate allegedly used abusive language and openly threatened him with dire consequences. Following the incident, Ratan Nath lodged a written FIR at Sabroom Police Station.

He has also sought a fair and impartial inquiry into the matter by submitting written complaints to senior authorities, including the District Magistrate and the Chief Secretary of Tripura.

In an emergency meeting held on Friday, Sabroom Bar Association President Sudhan Majumder and Secretary Apan Dutta announced that advocates would refrain from all work at the SDM court until a neutral investigation is conducted and justice is ensured. They stated that the protest reflects the collective concern of the legal fraternity over the dignity, safety, and independence of lawyers while discharging their professional duties.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion within administrative and legal circles in South Tripura, with demands growing for a transparent probe to ascertain the truth.
