Extending birthday greetings and best wishes, Leader of the Opposition Jiten Chowdhury on Wednesday urged Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha not to make public statements based on what he described as misleading and false information provided to him. At the same time, the CPI(M) leader strongly refuted the recent claim made by Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, IPS that Tripura’s law and order situation is the best it has been in the last twenty years, calling the statement completely untrue.

Addressing a press conference held in the morning at the CPI(M) Dasarath Deb Smriti Bhavan, Jiten Chowdhury questioned how such a claim could be made when, according to him, incidents of political violence are occurring even during BJP programmes. He alleged that supporters of the Tipra Motha party have attacked BJP public meetings and that even the Chief Minister’s public gatherings have come under attack in tribal areas, forcing the administration to deploy large contingents of Tripura State Rifles, police, and CRPF personnel for his events.

The Opposition Leader further alleged discrimination by the police in granting permission for public meetings. He said that when CPI(M) or other opposition parties apply for permission to hold rallies or meetings, the police often deny approval citing poor law and order conditions. “If the situation is so good, as claimed by the DGP, then why are opposition meetings being denied permission on the grounds that law and order is not conducive?” he asked.

Jiten Chowdhury remarked that while the DGP is personally a respectable individual, he is allegedly presenting false narratives to protect the image of the BJP government and fulfil the political interests of the ruling party and the Chief Minister. He accused the DGP of resorting to falsehoods at the very beginning of the year while reviewing last year’s law and order situation.

According to the Opposition Leader, the BJP-led government has failed not only on the law and order front but also in upholding constitutional values and the rule of law in the state. As evidence, he cited repeated instances where opposition meetings were either denied permission or attacked despite police presence. He pointed to a recent incident in which a CPI(M) meeting was allegedly attacked right in front of the police headquarters, yet no arrests were made. He further alleged that even after the incident, West Police Station initially hesitated to register a case.

“In such a situation, the DGP has no moral or administrative right to claim that Tripura’s law and order situation is the best in the last two decades,” Jiten Chowdhury asserted, reiterating his demand for accountability and transparency in policing and governance in the state.
