In the tension ridden upcoming election to the 300-member National Assembly the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is likely to win hands down as more than 70% of the electorate have indicated their preference for the BNP as the next ruling party of the country. The Awami League which ruled the country during 1996-2001 and for long fifteen years between 2009 and 2024 is out of reckoning following the ban put on the party by the interim government headed by Md Yunus as chief advisor.

The BNP’s prospects came to light in the wake of a countrywide survey conducted by a credible private organisation Eminence Associates For Social Development (EASD) . Announcing the results of the countrywide survey the chief of the organisation Shamim Haider said that among the more than twenty thousand voters surveyed , as high as 70% have confirmed their support for the BNP while a distant second and fundamentalist Jamat-e-Islami has secured endorsement from only 19% of the electorate. What however has come as a big jolt to the interim regime led by Chief Advisor Md Yunus is that their sponsored Nation al Citizens Party (NCP) has received support from a paltry 2.6% of the population . According to Shamim Haider , the chief of the EASD, the survey had been conducted between December 20 last year and January 1 this year. In order to further boost up the prospects of the party, BNP supremo Tarique Rahaman has asserted that ‘Bangladesh can not be conceived without the liberation war history of 1971 which is considered an effective ploy to wean away the nationalist and progressive voters of Awami League which is out of the electoral battle.

Meanwhile, the cancellation of a large number of nomination papers for the February 12 election at the stage of scrutiny has triggered a major controversy following the rejection of the nomination of Hindu advocate Gobinda Chandra Pramanik who is also the secretary general of Bangladesh National Hindu Mahajote (BNHMJ) . Pramanik had submitted nomination for Gopal Ganj-3 National Assembly seat in Faridpur district but his nomination was rejected on the ground that some of the mandatory signatures of 3086 voters had been found to be suspicious. Sources from Dhaka said that altogether 723 nominations have so far been cancelled by returning officers including 350 independents . Altogether 1842 nominations submitted by candidates of established political parties have been held to be valid.

Advocate Gobinda Chandra Pramanik has however blamed the BNP for conspiracy to have his nomination cancelled . He has decided to move the high court of Bangladesh for validation of his nomination so that he can contest the polls which he hopes to win.
