Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Monday inaugurated the five-day traditional Pitha-Puli Utsav at the Kathalia Class XII School ground in Sonamura subdivision, marking the second edition of the festival celebrating the cultural traditions associated with the Sankranti season.
Addressing the inaugural function, the Governor said that people across India celebrate the arrival of new harvests with joy, particularly in rural areas. He said that while the names of such festivals vary from region to region, their essence remains the same, centred on gratitude for fresh crops and collective celebration.
Nallu said he had curtailed his visit to Andhra Pradesh to attend the festival in Kathalia. He also praised the state government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, noting that sub-divisional hospitals in Tripura have been upgraded to provide quality medical services, reducing dependence on large hospitals. He described the care provided to pregnant women during childbirth as commendable.
The Governor said the government supports children from the stage of conception through nutritional assistance at anganwadi centres, followed by vaccination and educational support after birth. He stressed the need to create greater awareness in rural areas about central welfare schemes.
Highlighting women’s empowerment, Nallu said self-help group products from remote villages are being marketed nationally with assured pricing. He urged farmers to reduce the use of chemical fertilisers and adopt organic alternatives.
Rajya Sabha MP and state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee said the government is working for all sections of society. Former Union minister Pratima Bhoumik said it was the first time a Tripura Governor had attended a Bengali cultural programme in Kathalia.
