Youth Congress leader Shahjahan Islam was arrested on Monday after he surrendered before the West Agartala Police Station, bringing to an end nearly seven months of abscondence in connection with a politically sensitive case linked to an alleged derogatory social media post against Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.
The arrest has once again stirred controversy in Tripura’s political circles. The matter dates back to the night of June 8, 2025, when Shahjahan Islam allegedly posted objectionable remarks on social media targeting the Chief Minister. The post soon went viral, triggering sharp political reactions across the state.
According to available information, later that night, a group of agitated BJP supporters allegedly attacked Shahjahan Islam’s residence at Shantipara. The incident led to clashes and counter-attacks in the area, creating panic and tension among local residents.
Following the violence, cases were registered at the local police station from both sides. Based on the complaints, police arrested Shahjahan Islam’s father and brother. Shahjahan himself went into hiding soon after the incident. His father and brother were later released on bail, while Shahjahan continued to evade arrest for nearly seven months.
On Monday, Shahjahan Islam finally surrendered at the West Police Station, after which he was formally taken into custody.
It is significant to note that earlier, Shahjahan Islam had approached the Supreme Court seeking bail. The apex court had directed him to surrender within a stipulated time in January. However, he did not comply with the order at that time and surrendered only now.
Meanwhile, police have clearly stated the grounds for his arrest. Addressing the media, SDPO Devaprasad Roy said that Shahjahan Islam was arrested for making obscene and objectionable comments against the Chief Minister on social media. He also confirmed that the case includes allegations of signature forgery. According to the police, sufficient evidence has been collected to substantiate the charges.
The incident has once again brought issues of political confrontation, responsible use of social media, and law-and-order sensitivity in Tripura into sharp focus, sparking fresh debate across political and public platforms.
