While a cold wave continues to sweep across Tripura with the minimum temperature dropping below 12.5 degrees Celsius, the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTADC) has announced the closure of all educational institutions under its jurisdiction, even as state government run schools remain open.

According to an official order issued by the TTADC Education Department, all schools under the autonomous council will remain closed from January 3 to January 13 due to extreme cold weather conditions. However, the order specifies that practical examinations for Class X and Class XII will continue as per schedule.

The decision has brought relief to parents, particularly those with younger children, as prolonged exposure to cold mornings and strong winds has led to health concerns among students. Guardians say it has become increasingly difficult to send children to school during early hours amid the prevailing cold conditions.

In contrast, no similar announcement has been made so far by the Tripura state government for government schools. This has sparked widespread discussion and criticism, with many questioning how two different rules can exist within the same state under similar weather conditions.

Teachers and educationists have also voiced their concerns, suggesting that the state government should consider a temporary closure or announce winter vacation or study leave to ensure students safety. They argue that government school and college students are equally affected by the cold wave.

The issue has gained traction on social media, where many citizens are demanding at least ten days of leave for government schools and colleges. Several parents, especially from rural areas, pointed out that cold conditions are harsher in villages due to stronger winds and longer travel distances, making daily school commutes risky for children.

With temperatures remaining low and cold wave conditions persisting across Tripura, public expectation is growing for the state government to take a uniform and humanitarian decision in the interest of students health and well-being.
