Former BJP Rajya Sabha MP (2010-2016) Tarunn Vijay who had arrived at Agartala yesterday on behalf of the Uttarakhand state government visited the home of slain tribal student of Tripura, Anjel Chakma (24), and spoke to his father and family members this morning. He assured the family that the Uttarakhand state government will spare no pains to have the culprits arrested in connection with the murder of Anjel Chakma (24) and punished by the court and the charge-sheet will be framed in such a way as to ensure that the culprits are handed down death sentence except two who are minors.
Tarun Vijay, a former editor of RSS organ ‘Panchajanya’ and a leading intellectual and social activist, had arrived at Agartala yesterday on behalf of the Uttarakhand government and met the governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and the chief minister Dr Manik Saha. He headed for Machhmara area under Unakoti district this morning by a car and met the parents and family members of Anjel Chakma. He assured the family that the Uttarakhand government is standing by them and the guilty persons will not be able to escape justice. “The government will seek the highest possible sentencing in this case from court for culpable homicide; five of the six main culprits are already behind bars and two of them have been sent to juvenile home because of their status as minors while a police team have gone to Nepal to trace out and nab the sixth and main culprit” Tarun Vijay told the parents of Anjel Chakma.
Speaking to media persons Tarun Vijay reiterated the same position.”That was a heinous crime and at this moment our duty is to stand by the family and ensure that the culprits are brought to justice; the Uttarakhand government is doing just that” said Tarun Vijay. He added that the Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami as well as the people of Uttarakhand are deeply shocked by the killing of Anjel Chakma because many students from northeastern states of India go to study in Uttarakhand. He asserted that the priority of the Uttarakhand government is to ensure full safety for students of northeast studying in Uttarakhand.
Meanwhile, AnJel Chakma (24), an MBA student from Tripura in Dehradun, had been verbally abused with racist slurs by a gang of local people in a market on December 9 . When he protested this and introduced himself as an ‘Indian’ these thugs set upon him. They beat him with rods inflicting severe injuries on spine and head and also stabled. He was shifted to hospital in Dehradun where he battled for life in critical condition for more than a fortnight and finally succumbed to the injuries sustained on December 25. His murder triggered a countrywide furore and the NHRC has sought a detailed report on the tragic incident even as the Uttarakhand government has constituted a special investigation team to go into the murder and file a foolproof charge-sheet for ensuring speedy trial and punishment for the culprits. Altogether five culprits have already been arrested while hunt is on to track down and nab the sixth culprit who is hiding in Nepal. The members of SIT of Uttarakhand police have gone to Nepal to arrest the sixth and main culprit.
