Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday inspected the proposed site for the reconstruction of the historic Jackson Gate, a royal-era structure originally built during the reign of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya.

Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Saha said the gateway was constructed in 1927 as a mark of respect to Sir Francis Stanley Jackson, the then Governor of the Bengal Province. He said the structure was built by local contractor Srinibas Saha and its architectural design was inspired by the Charminar gateway in Hyderabad.

The chief minister described the Jackson Gate as an important cultural and historical landmark of Agartala, recalling its association with the city’s past. He said the structure evoked strong nostalgic sentiments among residents who grew up around it and stressed the need to restore it for future generations. He added that the reconstruction would help create awareness about Tripura’s royal heritage and the historical significance of the site.

Saha said the project would be completed within one and a half years, asserting that there would be no fund constraints or delays. He also directed the concerned department to incorporate visitor-friendly features, including designated spaces for photography.

Criticising the previous Left Front government, the chief minister said the gateway was demolished in 1981, which he described as an unjustified decision. He said the present government was committed to preserving and honouring Tripura’s historical legacy, including the contributions of the Manikya dynasty.
