The chief minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami has spoken to the family members of Angel Chakma (24) who had been attacked brutally by a mob of unruly elements in Dehradun on December 9 and succumbed to his injuries in hospital on December 25. After hurling racist slurs against him in a Dehradun market the demented mob beat him up severely and also stabbed him after he had protested, asserting that he was an ‘Indian and not Chinky’ (Chinese). Altogether five of the guilty persons have been arrested by the Uttarakhand police in connection with the murder but the prime accused is stated to have fled to Nepal. However the senior SP (Deharadun) Ajay Singh had struck a discordant note stating that there was racist angle in the matter, drawing flaks from all around.

The Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami sanctioned the first instalment of a compensation package of Rs 4.12 lakhs for the family of Angel Chakma and spoke to his family to convey his condolences and to assure them that strict action will be taken to ensure punishment for the killers of Angel Chakma and a reward of Rs 25 thousand has already been announced for information leading to the arrest of the prime accused in the case. In a statement Pushkar Singh Dhami said that besides conveying condolences to the bereaved father of Angel Chakma on behalf of the people of Uttarakhand, he assured the unfortunate father that the culprits will be brought to justice as per law. “I would like to state unequivocally that that maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens is the highest priority of the state government of Uttarakhand…. ensuring security of students coming to study in uttarakhand is the collective responsibility of the people and government of Uttarakhand and we will ensure full justice” said Dhami.

Meanwhile, the ministers of Tripura, Santana Chakma, Tinku Roy and MLA Shambhu Lal Chakma today visited the house of Angel Chakma and spoke to the bereaved family. The team of ministers and the MLA also handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakhs to the family as compensation and assured members of the family that the state government will do everything possible to ensure justice for Angel by having the culprits behind his murder brought to book. The chief minister Dr Manik Saha also spoke to his Uttarakhand counterpart and requested him to ensure justice for Angel Chakma.
