The process for appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Tripura University has formally begun, with the interview for the coveted post scheduled to be held in two phases on January 7 and January 9 in New Delhi.
According to sources, a total of fourteen candidates have applied for the post. The interviews will be conducted in two sessions, with seven candidates appearing on each day. The applicants include four candidates from Delhi, three from Gujarat, two from Punjab, and one each from Assam, Manipur, Odisha, and Banaras. It is learnt that no local candidate from Tripura has applied for the prestigious position.
At present, the university is being run by Professor Shyamal Das, the senior-most professor of the English Department, who has been officiating as Vice-Chancellor since August last year after the completion of tenure of former VC Professor Ganga Prasad Prasain.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education (formerly the Ministry of Human Resource Development) is reportedly aiming to complete the entire selection process and appoint a new Vice-Chancellor by January 25.
However, amid the ongoing selection process, a strong demand has emerged across the Tripura University campus, with teachers, non-teaching staff, students, and academic circles urging the Ministry to appoint a genuine, experienced, and independent administrator as the next Vice-Chancellor.
Voices from within the campus have stressed that the university requires a visionary academic leader with proven administrative capability to address long-pending academic, infrastructural, and governance-related challenges. They have also expressed concern that earlier appointments were allegedly influenced by powerful political lobbies, which, according to them, adversely affected the functioning and academic environment of the university.
“The Ministry should ensure transparency and merit in the selection process this time and must not repeat past mistakes,” a senior faculty member remarked, adding that the credibility and future growth of Tripura University depend heavily on the choice of its next Vice-Chancellor.
As expectations rise, all eyes are now on the Ministry’s final decision, which is being seen as a crucial turning point for restoring academic excellence and administrative stability at Tripura University.
