The shock over the tragic death of delivery boy Prasenjit Sarkar in Dharmanagar has not yet faded, and Tripura has witnessed another horrifying incident involving a delivery worker. This time, a 21 year old delivery boy, Prabir Shil, was brutally beaten to death in a shocking act of violence at Tufania Lunga under Bamutia, on the outskirts of Agartala.
Prabir Shil, a resident of the area, was working as a food delivery partner for Zomato. According to initial reports, he was assaulted mercilessly by miscreants in a nearby tea garden area, allegedly following an altercation related to a food delivery. The attackers also vandalised his scooter during the assault.
Prabir sustained critical injuries and was rushed to GB Pant Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night. After post mortem examination on Monday, his body was handed over to the grieving family. Standing outside the hospital, Prabir’s devastated father Pranab Shil narrated the sequence of events that led to the brutal killing of his son.
At present, the exact reason behind the violent attack remains unclear. However, police suspect that a dispute over food delivery may have triggered the assault. An investigation has been initiated, and several individuals from the tea garden area have been placed under suspicion. Police teams have intensified surveillance and are questioning possible suspects linked to the incident.
This killing has come close on the heels of the deeply disturbing incident in Dharmanagar, where delivery boy Prasenjit died by suicide after being allegedly assaulted and humiliated. In that case, all five accused have been arrested and are currently in judicial custody, including three women and two men. Additionally, another incident of severe misbehaviour with a delivery worker had earlier been reported from the Airport Police Station area of Agartala.
The back to back incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety and dignity of delivery workers in Tripura. With limited opportunities for government employment, many unemployed youths are turning to delivery jobs for survival. However, these incidents highlight the complete lack of security and protection in this line of work.
There is now a growing demand for the government to take urgent and concrete steps to ensure the safety, legal protection, and dignity of delivery workers, so that earning a livelihood does not come at the cost of one’s life.
