Several Teachers Eligibility Test qualified aspirants were detained by police on Monday after they attempted to march towards the Chief Minister’s residence demanding immediate recruitment against vacant teaching posts in Tripura.

The protest followed the state government’s reported decision not to appoint all TET-qualified candidates in a single phase, triggering discontent among successful aspirants.

Hundreds of candidates initially assembled outside the Education Department headquarters at Siksha Bhavan, seeking clarity on the delay in completing the recruitment process. They questioned why appointments were not being made despite a large number of vacancies.

An aspirant said the Chief Minister, who also holds the education portfolio, had earlier stated in the Assembly that recruitment would depend on the availability of vacant posts. Based on that assurance, candidates sought information through an RTI application.

According to the RTI reply, there are 2,703 vacant posts under TET-I and 1,605 under TET-II, while the total number of qualified candidates is around 1,700. “With sufficient vacancies available, the delay is unjustified,” the aspirant claimed.

The protesters also demanded strict adherence to reservation norms in the recruitment process.

As no response was received from the Directorate of Education, the demonstrators attempted to march towards the Chief Minister’s residence. Police erected barricades to prevent the march, citing law and order concerns.

Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer D P Ray said most protesters dispersed after persuasion, while a section that refused to comply was detained to avoid any untoward incident. No injuries were reported, police said.
