AR, Customs seize foreign cigarettes worth Rs 65 lakh

Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Customs officials, seized foreign cigarettes valued at about Rs 65 lakh from Tripura’s Khowai district on Monday, officials said.
The seizure was made during a routine operation in the Chakma Ghat area under Teliamura subdivision following specific intelligence inputs. A joint team intercepted an Ashok Leyland truck bearing registration number TR-01-AP-1717 during a morning check.
On searching the vehicle, personnel recovered 65 cartons containing around 6.5 lakh sticks of foreign cigarettes, officials said, adding that the consignment was meant for illegal distribution.
One person, identified as Giashuddin, son of Maynul Haque and a resident of Baitakhal Basti village in Patharkandi area of Assam’s Karimganj district, was apprehended in connection with the seizure.
The seized contraband along with the detained individual was later handed over to the Customs department for further investigation and legal action under relevant provisions of law.
Assam Rifles said it continues to work in close coordination with Customs and other enforcement agencies to curb smuggling and other illegal activities in the state. The force reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region and supporting the government’s efforts to check cross-border crime.
