A major controversy has erupted in Tripura following serious allegations against the Chairman of the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC), Kush Kumar Sharma, who is accused of misbehaving with the state’s Tourism, Food and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury while under the influence of alcohol at a city hotel named Polo Towers. The incident has triggered widespread public outrage and raised serious questions about the integrity of constitutional and autonomous institutions in the state.Police sources said an FIR has been formally registered at NCC Police Station, Agartala, based on a written complaint filed by Havildar Shyamal Ghosh (49) of the Security Unit, Tripura, who is posted as Personal Security Officer (PSO) to Minister Sushanta Chowdhury. According to the complaint, the incident occurred on the night of 28 December 2025 at around 10:30 pm at Polo Tower Hotel, Agartala. After attending the Prabashi Tripurabashi Summit, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury was preparing to leave the hotel when a vehicle allegedly belonging to the TPSC Chairman was parked in front of the minister’s convoy, obstructing movement.

When the PSO requested the vehicle to be moved, the driver, later identified as Kush Kumar Sharma, along with his son Meghasish Sharma, allegedly got out of the vehicle in an intoxicated state and began hurling abuses at the PSO and the minister. The situation reportedly escalated rapidly. The complaint alleges that the accused persons became aggressive, attempted to physically attack the minister, and issued death threats. During the scuffle, on-duty TSR Rifleman Sukanta Bhowmik intervened to protect the minister. At this point, the accused allegedly tried to snatch the service weapon of the TSR jawan. Meghasish Sharma reportedly pushed the jawan, causing him to fall and sustain injuries.

It is further alleged that the accused directed his son to open fire on security personnel. Another TSR rifleman, Kartik Das, was also allegedly targeted in an attempt to snatch his weapon. After a prolonged struggle, security personnel managed to recover the firearms.Three women accompanying the accused reportedly joined in, abusing the minister and security forces using filthy language and threatening dire consequences.

Police from NCC Police Station arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. The accused father and son were detained, and their identities were subsequently confirmed. The incident has sent shockwaves across Agartala city, particularly because it involves the head of the state’s premier recruitment body called TPSC.

Social media platforms have been flooded with sharp criticism, with many influencers and citizens demanding the immediate removal of Kush Kumar Sharma from the post of TPSC Chairman.Several posts questioned how such an individual was appointed in the first place, asking whether Tripura lacked eligible and competent administrators, officers, or judges. Many demanded that TPSC, a crucial constitutional institution, must be protected from political patronage and erosion of credibility. There has also been broader criticism regarding the appointment of several senior officials from outside the state to key positions, including Vice Chancellors of Tripura Central University and former CMDs of state PSUs. Critics allege repeated instances of misconduct, political backing, and abrupt exits after controversies, branding such posts as political rehabilitation centres.

Highly placed sources confirmed that Manik Saha, the Chief Minister of Tripura, has taken serious note of the incident. He has reportedly directed the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure a thorough police investigation and initiate appropriate legal action.According to reliable information, the state government is actively considering the dismissal of the TPSC Chairman if he does not submit his resignation voluntarily. The matter is being viewed as extremely serious due to its implications for public trust, rule of law, and the dignity of constitutional offices. What Lies Ahead With a criminal case now officially registered and investigation underway, the coming days are expected to be crucial. The incident has reignited debate over accountability, transparency, and the need to safeguard Tripura’s institutions from political influence and misconduct.

Public sentiment remains firmly in favour of swift and decisive action, as citizens demand that no individual

, regardless of position, be allowed to undermine the authority of the government, the security forces, or the sanctity of democratic institutions.
