Several gas tanker trucks, locally referred to as bullet trucks, reportedly originating from Bangladesh were detained by local protesters at Budhijung Nagar under Jirania subdivision on Saturday, triggering tension in the area for several hours.
According to local sources and protesters present at the site, around eight vehicles were stopped as part of a blockade opposing the entry of Bangladeshi vehicles into Indian territory. The protesters cited recent political tensions, alleged anti-India statements, and reported attacks on Hindu and other minority communities in Bangladesh as the primary reasons behind the protest.
One of the protesters stated that allowing Bangladeshi vehicles into India under the prevailing circumstances was unacceptable, alleging that minorities were being targeted across the border. Another protester claimed that the blockade was intended to send a strong message against such developments.
There were allegations from the protesters that the detained trucks were fuel carriers transporting gas of Russian origin into India via Bangladesh. However, officials clarified that this information could not be independently verified at the time.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Jirania, Animesh Dhar, confirmed local media that the administration acted swiftly upon receiving information about the blockade. He said discussions were held with the protesters, following which the road was cleared and vehicular movement was restored. The detained vehicles were subsequently allowed to proceed to their destinations.
The SDM also stated that the protesters submitted a memorandum outlining their demands and concerns, which would be forwarded to higher authorities for further consideration.
The incident comes amid strained diplomatic sentiments and heightened public reactions following recent political developments in Bangladesh, reflecting how regional issues are increasingly influencing local sentiments along border areas.
