The ‘Tring’ or new year festival of the tribal communities of Tripura will come off tomorrow in Paglabari ADC village under Padmabil block in Khowai subdivision. The festival marked by musical bonanza will commence in the evening and continue throughout the night as in previous years. The honourable governor of Tripura Indrasena Reddy Nallu, ‘Tipra Motha’ supremo Prdyot Kisore, agriculture minister Ratan Lal Nath, minister for forest Animesh Debbarma and several other ministers and MLAs of the ruling BJP and the CPI (M).
This was announced in an interaction with the media by the ‘Tipra Motha’ MLA Ranjit Debbarma in Paglabari which falls under the Ramchandra Ghat assembly constituency represented by him in the assembly. Ranjit said that the ‘Tring’ festival tomorrow will begin with traditional tribal dances of Tripura like ‘Mamita’ , ‘Lebang Bumani’ and ‘Hozagiri’ etc and will continue through other dances and songs of the tribal community. All the leaders and office-bearers of the ‘Kokborok Hukumu Mission’ and ‘Movement for Kokborok’ will attend the ‘Tring’ festival. Renowned singer of Arunachal Pradesh Jelly Tai Taming and leading artists from Tripura will perform in the programme tomorrow.
A section of tribal intellectuals however express reservations over the timing of the ‘Tring’ festival as it has been brought forward near the Christimas day. “We have a separate new year that actually begins from the month of April and this has been continuing over the past hundreds of years ; we celebrate our ‘Tring’ then but the new and young generation of tribals , influenced by Christian missionaries , have introduced this mischief of holding ‘Tring’ in the third week of December so that it coincides with Chrismas; this is glaring defiance of history” said a senior Hindu tribal intellectual.
