Tripura is set to witness an outpouring of grief as the mortal remains of Bishwabandhu Sen, the sitting Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly and MLA from Dharmanagar, are scheduled to arrive in Agartala around 1 pm today.
According to official arrangements, Sen’s body will be brought to Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport from Bengaluru. From the airport, the mortal remains will be taken first to the Tripura Legislative Assembly, where legislators, officials, and staff will pay their last respects. Thereafter, the body will be taken to the BJP state headquarters before beginning the final journey by road to Dharmanagar. His last rites will be performed there later in the day with full state honours.
Bishwabandhu Sen passed away after battling for life for nearly four and a half months at a private hospital in Bengaluru. His demise has cast a deep pall of gloom over Tripura’s political, administrative, and social spheres.
Official sources recalled that on August 8 this year, while travelling by train from Agartala to Dharmanagar, Sen suddenly fell ill inside the train’s bathroom. He was immediately rushed to Tripura Medical College and Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had suffered a brain haemorrhage. As his condition worsened, he was shifted within three days to a private hospital in Bengaluru for advanced treatment.
Assembly Secretariat Sources said that during the long course of treatment, his health condition fluctuated several times. Despite sustained medical efforts and intensive care, he ultimately succumbed to the illness.
The news of his death has triggered widespread mourning across party lines. North Tripura district, especially Dharmanagar, remains virtually grief-stricken.
At Sen’s residence at Ramalay in Dharmanagar, silence prevails. The room where he once held political discussions, planned strategies, and listened to people’s grievances now remains locked, symbolising the void left behind by his passing. The state government has decided to accord full state honours during the last rites. As a mark of respect, a three-day state mourning will be observed across Tripura till December 28, during which the national flag will fly at half-mast.
All educational institutions will remain closed on Friday, while scheduled events in Dharmanagar, including the ‘Atal Kavita O Sahitya Utsav’ and ‘Khelo Dharmanagar’, have been cancelled.
As Tripura bids farewell to one of its senior legislators, the focus is also slowly shifting to the future leadership of the Assembly, with the selection of the next Speaker expected to be a significant development in the state’s legislative affairs in the coming March month.
