Agartala was plunged into deep grief on Friday following the death of former Agartala Municipal Council member Pratima Saha, barely three days after the demise of her husband, noted gynaecologist Dr M L Saha. The back-to-back losses have cast a pall of sorrow across the city, cutting short the lives of two well-known and respected personalities within a span of just 72 hours.
Pratima Saha, a former councillor of the Agartala Municipal Council, breathed her last on Thursday night at a private nursing home in London. She had been battling Parkinson’s disease for the past two years and had been bedridden for a prolonged period. For several years, the London nursing home had effectively become her permanent residence, where her treatment and round-the-clock care were carried out. Though she was occasionally brought home in a wheelchair, her health condition required continuous medical supervision.
Her death came as a severe emotional blow to the family, especially as Dr M L Saha had passed away only on Tuesday. Dr Saha, one of the state’s most eminent and widely respected gynaecologists, died at the age of 78. Known for his lifelong dedication to medical service, he was regarded as a compassionate physician and an upright human being, earning admiration across generations of patients.
Pratima Saha herself had carved out a distinct identity in public life. In the 1995 Agartala Municipal Council elections, she was elected from the then Ward No. 8 as a candidate of the Indian National Congress. During her five-year tenure as an elected representative, she remained closely involved in a wide range of developmental works in her ward. Her hands-on approach, accessibility to residents, and commitment to civic improvement helped her gain considerable popularity in a short span of time.
The Saha family is also known for its strong association with the medical profession. The couple is survived by two sons—Tadit Saha and Saptarshi Saha and a daughter, Shyamali Saha, all of whom are doctors. They also leave behind daughters-in-law, grandchildren, relatives, and a large circle of admirers and well-wishers.
As news of Pratima Saha’s passing spread on Friday, messages of condolence poured in from political circles, the medical fraternity, and the general public. Many recalled her dedication as a public representative and her quiet strength during years of illness. The near-simultaneous passing of Dr M L Saha and Pratima Saha has left an irreplaceable void, with Agartala mourning the loss of two lives that were deeply intertwined with service, compassion, and public goodwill.
