Tripura Police on Tuesday arrested a woman and her husband for allegedly killing the woman’s 70-year-old mother following a dispute over money and material demands in the State capital, officials said.
The deceased, Sulekha Dey, was a resident of the West Bubhanban area under West Agartala police station. Her daughter Bulti Deb and son-in-law Bishnu Deb have been taken into custody in connection with the case.
Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer D P Ray said the investigation took a dramatic turn after the initial complainants themselves emerged as the prime accused. The couple had first reported that unidentified miscreants had entered their house and assaulted the elderly woman before fleeing. She was subsequently shifted to GB Pant Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
However, police found major inconsistencies in their statements. The accused were living with the victim, and no evidence was found to support the theory of an outsider’s involvement. During investigation, police uncovered frequent family disputes over financial matters. Bishnu Deb had allegedly been demanding a new scooter, while there was also a fixed deposit of Rs 2.5 lakh nearing maturity, over which differences had arisen.
When the elderly woman resisted their demands, the accused allegedly assaulted her, causing fatal injuries. To portray the incident as a robbery, they reportedly removed her gold ornaments, which were later recovered.
West Agartala police station officer-in-charge Rana Chatterjee said digital and scientific evidence helped crack the case. Further investigation is underway.
