Police have booked five persons in connection with the alleged open slaughter of cows and sale of beef along the Kanchanpur–Jampui road in North Tripura district, an incident that triggered tension in the Kanchanpur subdivision, officials said on Tuesday.

According to police and local sources, passers-by on Monday evening noticed pieces of meat being sold openly at the Brupara naka point. The presence of a severed animal head led locals to suspect that the meat was beef. The alleged act drew objections from local Hindu youths, following which the accused reportedly threatened them with iron rods, crowbars and sharp weapons, forcing them to retreat and inform the police.

Police personnel later reached the spot but found no one present, officials said.

The incident drew sharp condemnation from the Kanchanpur unit of the Vishva Hindu Parishad, which on Tuesday submitted a deputation to the Kanchanpur police station demanding immediate arrests. The organisation claimed the open sale of beef had hurt the religious sentiments of the local Hindu population.

VHP Kanchanpur unit general secretary Narayan Nath alleged the incident was a deliberate attempt to provoke communal tension and said a written complaint had been filed against five persons from Brupara, Barachhara village and a Bru resettlement camp in Ambassa.

Kanchanpur police station officer-in-charge Srikanta Rudra Pal said two complaints had been received, cases registered and investigation was underway.
