The otherwise puppet Tripura police who always dance to the tune of politicians seem to have acquired a specialisation in targeting persecuted Hindu entrants into Tripura from Bangladesh. A Bangladeshi Hindu identified as Pancha Chandra Das had entered Tripura two months ago through Khowai border to save his life from Muslim killers in troubletorn Nasir Nagar area under Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh. He was picked up by police personnel from NCC police station area, acting on a tip-off and this was flaunted as an achievement.

However , the arrest of the Hindu man has raised important questions as it was way back in 2019 that the BJP led central government had enacted the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) paving the way for easy access to citizenship of India for the persecuted Hindu, Buddhist, Parsi, Christian, Jain and Sikh minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanisthan with December 31 2014 as the cut-off date. Recently , this Act has been further amended to accommodate the minority entrants from these three hell of countries by extending the cut-off date up to December 31 2024.

Given this context the persecuted minorities should not be disturbed but rather accommodated , said a rights activist. “The then East Pakistan and then Bangladesh have always been a grave-yard for the Hindu, Buddhist minorities and what has been happening in that country over the past year is well known; given this context the stay of persecuted Hindus should be considered sympathetically and this should be regularised in view of the continuing anti-Hindu and anti-Buddhist violence in Bangladesh; there are certain restrictions in granting permanent residency rights to them in tribal dominated areas but the plainland is there ; the Tripura police should be sensitised over the issue and properly informed of legal position” said the rights activist.
