Serious allegations of large-scale encroachment and illegal sale of government (khas) land have surfaced in the Barjala Assembly constituency, particularly across areas such as Barjala, Gorkhabasti, Natun Nagar, Durjoynagar, Lichubagan, and along the Airport Road up to the airport zone.

According to local residents, a fierce competition has emerged over the last seven years to illegally occupy government land stretching from Natun Nagar through Durjoynagar right up to the airport area. During this period, land brokerage activities are alleged to have increased manifold, with government land being occupied and sold overnight through organised networks of middlemen, while the administration has allegedly remained a silent spectator.

Locals allege that a man originally from Bangladesh and now projected as an influential nationalist leader in the area, has become the central figure in this land mafia network. It is alleged that he has amassed enormous wealth by forcibly grabbing land belonging to helpless residents and selling it swiftly. Shockingly, residents claim his name appears in voter lists of both countries, and his political clout now extends deep into the region.

Under his patronage, a new land brokerage team is allegedly being led by a retired jawan, who is said to be acting as the operational head on the ground. A resident of the Dhaleswar area and reportedly a former Air Force personnel, is accused of building a vast land brokerage network not only in Natun Nagar and Durjoynagar but also across Agartala city and its suburban areas. Residents allege that khas land is being converted overnight into private holdings and sold off, enriching the brokers at the cost of genuine buyers. The alleged team includes some local individuals, all described by locals as known mafia figures with multiple cases registered against them in various police stations.
