Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, Anurag Dhankar, IPS on Friday announced that individuals providing credible information leading to the identification of drug kingpins and major traffickers would be rewarded, with their identities kept strictly confidential by the police.

The DGP said that although a large number of people are being arrested with narcotic substances, most of them are involved in the drug trade due to financial compulsions. He appealed to those engaged at the lower levels of drug peddling not to contribute to the expansion of drug networks but instead assist the police by sharing information against major drug dealers. In return, the police would provide monetary assistance to informers, he said.

Anurag also urged peace-loving residents across Tripura to cooperate more actively with the police in the fight against drugs, stating that community support is essential for the complete eradication of narcotics from society.

Speaking to the editor of tripurainfo, the DGP highlighted that improved police–public relations have resulted in a sharp decline of around 10 percent in the overall crime rate as well as road traffic accident fatalities in Tripura compared to last year. He noted that while cases under the NDPS Act have increased, the rise reflects intensified preventive and enforcement measures undertaken by the police over the past year.

The DGP was addressing a programme organised at RK Pur Police Station, where he elaborated on the core responsibilities of the police. He said maintaining law and order, preventing crime, and detecting crime after it occurs are the three major duties of the police, and that effective execution of these responsibilities requires active community participation. He added that the strong presence of civilians at the event was a clear indication of growing trust between the police and the public.

Anurag expressed satisfaction over the large-scale blood donation camp organised by Tripura Police as part of the programme. He said 60 civilians and 30 police personnel came forward to donate blood, describing it as a powerful example of police–civilian cooperation.

On crime trends, the DGP stated that the overall crime rate in the state has declined by around 10 percent compared to the previous year. He clarified that the increase in registered cases was primarily due to NDPS-related offences, indicating that preventive policing and enforcement actions have been significantly strengthened.

Referring to road safety, Anurag said Tripura Police have treated road traffic accidents as a priority area. He informed that fatalities due to road traffic accidents have dropped by more than 10 percent over the last year. Intensive public awareness campaigns were conducted in schools, markets, and public spaces to curb road rage and promote safer driving practices, he added.

During his Udaipur visit, the DGP also participated in a blanket distribution programme at a local orphanage. He expressed confidence that all 34 inmates of the orphanage would grow up to become responsible citizens and contribute positively to society in the future.
