In a major step towards making Unakoti a plastic-free district, the district administration on Thursday installed around 50,000 dustbins and plastic waste collection bins under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin). The initiative aims to strengthen waste management practices and reduce the use of single-use plastic across urban and rural areas.

The main programme was organised at the Gournagar Market Shed in Kailashahar, where senior district officials and elected representatives launched the drive. A colourful awareness rally was taken out through the market area to sensitise people about the harmful effects of plastic, following which plastic waste bins were installed at prominent locations.

District Magistrate Dr Tamal Majumdar said the initiative would cover all 92 panchayat areas of the district, including ADC villages, gram panchayats and the municipal council areas of Kailashahar and Kumarghat. He informed that dustbins would be placed in front of households, offices, shops and commercial establishments, along with sustained awareness campaigns to promote responsible waste disposal. Describing it as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the state, he emphasised collective participation for its success.

Officials, elected representatives, ASHA and anganwadi workers, self-help group members and social organisations are actively involved to ensure effective implementation. Similar installation drives were also carried out at tourist spots, gram panchayat offices and across municipal wards, where residents took pledges to remain plastic-free.
