The Tripura government has intensified its focus on rainwater conservation to ensure long-term water security, with Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath asserting that the state remains safe in terms of groundwater usage. He said sustained efforts are being made to maintain this position and safeguard resources for future generations.
The Minister was addressing the media after chairing an Executive Committee meeting on the Watershed Development Project under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana at Pragna Bhavan. He explained that the scheme aims to enhance rainwater storage through the construction of watersheds, check dams, ponds and plantations, enabling communities to become more self-reliant. According to him, the state has achieved significant success under the ongoing phase, with Phase 3.0 scheduled to begin after March.
Highlighting regional contrasts, Nath pointed out that states such as Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, which rely heavily on groundwater, are facing severe water stress due to falling water tables. In comparison, Tripura utilises only 9.7 per cent of its groundwater resources, placing it in a comparatively secure position.
He stressed the importance of prudent planning and urged officials to utilise the remaining project funds by January 15 to facilitate additional allocations in the next phase. The Minister also revealed plans to develop water bodies along national highways, integrated with road connectivity, children’s parks, open gyms and plantations, to promote conservation alongside community development.
