Public anger is intensifying over the death of gig worker Prasenjit Sarkar in Dharmanagar, as police are yet to arrest any of the accused even 72 hours after the incident. Serious questions are being raised about the role of the police, with allegations that pressure from the ruling party is preventing prompt action against the accused.

Prasenjit Sarkar, a delivery worker from the Kameshwar area of Dharmanagar, died under suspicious circumstances. On 14 December, his father lodged a formal complaint at Dharmanagar Police Station, naming five individuals and clearly stating their identities and addresses. Despite this, the police have allegedly remained inactive, triggering widespread outrage across the state.

Demanding an impartial investigation and immediate arrests, people from all walks of life came out on the streets of Dharmanagar on Wednesday evening. Hundreds of men and women participated in the protest, with a particularly strong presence of women, reflecting the depth of public resentment. Protesters raised slogans like 'We Want Justice' as the march moved from the Netaji statue area through Dighi Par, Kalibari Road, and finally reached Dharmanagar Police Station, where a sit-in demonstration was held.

Tensions escalated when a group of representatives from the protest attempted to meet the Officer-in-Charge of the police station. Allegedly, the police resorted to indiscriminate lathi-charge on the justice-seeking crowd. In the incident, Prasenjit Sarkar’s sister sustained serious injuries, further fuelling public anger and condemnation of police action.

On the same day, conscious citizens from different sections of society gathered in front of the Unakoti Kalakshetra to participate in a candlelight march, paying tribute to the deceased and reiterating their demand for justice.

Amid mounting protests, Chief Minister assured a fair and thorough investigation into Prasenjit Sarkar’s death, stating that those responsible would not be spared. However, allegations continue that the accused are close to the ruling party, and this political proximity is the reason behind the police’s alleged inaction.

As resentment that had been simmering for days finally erupted onto the streets of Dharmanagar, public confidence in the law enforcement machinery appears to be under severe strain. The demand remains clear and unwavering: an impartial probe, immediate arrests, and justice for Prasenjit Sarkar.
